THE LEMON:

Those of you who have seen me do my stand up act at a corporate function over the last two years would have probably seen me do a magical effect where I borrow a spectator’s $50 or sometimes a $100 note if there is a willing donor, I then have them sign their name on it and make it vanish by magic to the audiences amazement and confusion. Later in the show I cut open a Lemon and find their signed money inside! It is a very baffling effect and the situation of pretending to lose a spectator’s note lends itself to a lot of comedy!

Last night I did the effect at a function. I got to the end of the act and the spectators note was found in the Lemon! At this point a voice from the audience calls out “that’s not the first time he has made money from a lemon!” This got an enormous laugh! After the performance it was explained to me that the gentleman who owned the $50 was a car salesman! Once I knew that I understood the humour of the situation and the remark!

FUNNY YOUNG AUDIENCE MEMBERS:

The last few months have been flat out with Corporate End of Year Functions / Christmas Parties etc. However last week I had the pleasure of appearing at a couple of Preschool Christmas parties. I find performing for young children to be particularly rewarding.

It’s not uncommon to have littlies come up to me before or after my show and tell me their life story! You never know what they are going to come out with and I’m seriously thinking of writing down the funny things kids say to me and perhaps publishing a book one day.
Here are a couple of funny situations from last week:

1.       THE BABY

A young boy was telling me about his mum having his new baby brother in her tummy when a little girl interrupted him to tell me “My mum growed a baby too”.

2.     DOING THE SHOW

While I was setting up my show a little girl came in and said “Are we watching the show or doing the show?” I laughed and said with a smile “I might take the morning off and you can do the show!” The preschool teacher then chimed in and said “Don’t say that Joel because she is one that really would get up and do the show!”

AN ADVENTURE IN ADELAIDE!!

Last night I gave a "Magic Lecture" in Adelaide! The lecture was held at literally an "underground venue" - A World War 2 Air Raid Shelter! There are only two of these left in Adelaide!

The shelter is used as a meeting place for the Adelaide IBM and the Adelaide ASM. It is filled with beautiful magic memrobilia and a charming room called the "Hook Theatrette".
...
I had such fun there and was made to feel very welcome!

LECTURE FEEDBACK:

The President of the Magic Club that I did my "Lecture" for on Monday evening took the time to send me a lovely email / thank you message. I have been given permission to share it as a testimonial. Thank you Chadd.

Hi Joel,

Thank you for your time and professional lecture at last Monday night's Magic Circle Club meeting. I know I can speak for everyone on the committee and the members when saying how appreciative we all are of the opportunity to have you as a special guest at our club. Everyone was very appreciative that you were willing to travel so far to spend the time with us.

Your lecture was very entertaining which kept everyone engaged and interested in your presentation. It was appreciated that you also took the time to take everyone through the step by step process of some of your routines and tricks. Members young and old were very keen to hear what you had to say. I personally took a lot from your lecture and also scored myself some new tricks to play with - what an awesome night. I particularly enjoyed watching our junior members engage in your lecture.
Joel, your charisma and dedication to your craft is uplifting and inspiring. We look forward to having you back at the Magic Circle very soon. Thanks again for such a magical night.

Regards,
Chadd Small
President, Gold Coast Magic Circle

"Oh, did the poor old lady pass away?"
"No. Just too damn lazy to get an ash tray".
"Taxidermist, I would like to do something with these two dead pet rabbits of mine"
"Would you like them mounted, sir?"
"No. Just holding hands".

THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

"If you look like your passport photo,
Your too ill to travel"
There was a dog who saw his first parking metre and said "how do you like that - pay toilets".

ABSINTHE:

I just got home from seeing opening night of Absinthe at Wheeler Place Newcastle. I really enjoyed the show and as a bonus I ran into a friend and had a chat.

Absinthe is an acquired taste, I would not recommend you go and see it if "politically incorrect humour" or bad language offends you. On the other hand if you love circus, comedy or live shows in general then this show is a must see! The acts are all first class and the Spiegeltent is just beautiful. Everything inside is clean and well maintained.

This evenings performance was just about a sell out - not bad at all for a Tuesday evening!
When I saw the show in Las Vegas a couple of years ago it ended to a standing ovation - although that didn't happen this evening the Newcastle audience were still clearly blown away by the high quality of the acts and left the space buzzing with excitement.

A LOVELY REVIEW:

I received this lovely email from a gentleman who attended my Queensland Society Of Magician's Lecture last Monday evening. I have been given permission to use it as a testimonial.

Dear Joel,
What a great honour it was to meet you for the first time last evening and for the privilege of attending your wonderful lecture / performance at the Q S M.

On behalf of the society, I would like to thank you sincerely for making the flight to Brisbane and to share with us what proved to be a truly thoroughly enjoyable evening. Your performance and lecture was excellent where you shared so much of your material so freely and unassumingly. You covered a
great deal of information that you have obviously gained over your many years of being a professional entertainer, yet did not hesitate in sharing this knowledge and expertise with us. Even your lines and patter were really good. (I just hope members won't steal some really good lines)

By beginning with an impromptu performance certainly set the scene for the evening. Then an explanation of your effects was very comprehensive. Not only were the more senior members of the society thoroughly entertained but our younger members were in complete awe of your fine presentation. Your choice of material was first class and ideally suited to the cross section of members. One doesn't always need large flashy props because your presentation
showed that it is the performer and not his props that are the entertainment.

I loved your beautiful billiard ball, routine so superbly performed that for me was pure theatre. How you managed to manipulate such large balls is beyond me and was so impressed with this lovely interlude of skill and expertise blended into such a delightful performance. This is something
quite unique.

It was good hearing you speak so well about Jim and Gwen and their influence on your career and can only agree that I really enjoy their company when they visit Brisbane. It was good to see his research and being a magical historian being recognised. We are so fortunate to belong to such a
wonderful fraternity.

Joel may I wish you continued success with your magic career and thank you again for sharing with us as you did last night. It will be a night to remember and to inspire all of us (even this old fellow) to strive and to work towards making magic an even more acceptable art from. Despite my age, I still remain  passionate about magic and it is people like yourself that encourage us. You are indeed a credit to the profession. Well done.

Kind regards David J.

MAGIC LECTURE:

From time to time groups of Magicians gather for "Conventions" or "Magic Lectures".

On Monday evening I had the pleasure of giving a "Lecture" at the Queensland Society Of Magicians.

All went smoothly and much to my relief I got lovely feedback on the Lecture.

"Joel's Work is nothing short of brilliant and his Manipulation Skills stamp him as one of the greats of Australian Magic" - Joe Lewis. President Queensland Society Of Magicians.
