I'm thrilled to be working at a sporting awards presentation night at Port Stephens this evening with local NBN Television legend Mr Mike Rabbitt.

Mike reminded me this evening that we first worked together in 1997!!

A MAGICAL NIGHT AT NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY!

I had the special privilege of performing close up magic at The University of Newcastle, Australia 's Masked Ball Gala Night this evening in the Great Hall. 

It was a very special and significant celebration of 60 years of Newcastle University!

The audience was buzzing and there were lots of great feedback about the way my elegant sleight of hand magic added to the atmosphere.

I had the special privilege of performing close up strolling magic at Sophie and Jarrod's Wedding this evening at Rydges Resort Hunter Valley. 

The audience was VERY enthusiastic about the performances and there were lots of lovely complements from guests about how much fun the magic added to the atmosphere.

A MAGICAL BIRTHDAY PARTY!

I had a change of setting from Corporate Events, School Shows and Weddings yesterday - I went back to my roots by performing a Kids Birthday Party Magic Show! The children (and I! ) had an absolute blast!

I love doing Kids Parties as they are great fun and very rewarding. I did literally thousands of them when I was first starting my entertainment business over two decades ago! Birthday shows were a great training ground as children are so honest with their instant feedback on the show. Also, sometimes before I arrive at a party, children may have already filled up with cake, lollies and red drink 😅

Yesterday's party entertainment was a coordinated by the joyful and enthusiastic Central Coast Entertainers Mel and Olivia from Teddy Bear Entertainment who professionally facilitated games, dance music and activities :)

THE HUNTER'S WEDDING MAGICIAN!

I always enjoy performing at Weddings.

At first glance this may seem like an unusual occasion to have a Magician perform. But the idea of having "Close Up Strolling Magic" as part of the big day is a very popular option in the UK where there are magicians who specialise in Wedding Entertainment! 

I have found that there is almost always a break between the ceremony and reception where the couple go off to get photos and folks are left to mingle. This is the perfect time for me to keep the guests entertained until the couple return. There are always complements on how much fun this adds to the atmosphere and it has been described as being "the perfect ice-breaker". 

On many occasions the couples have also trusted me with the role of MC too - booking me for the entire event and having me make house keeping announcements,  introduce speakers and keep things running smoothly during the reception. 

My efforts have caught the attention of local Celebrants who for the SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, have nominated my entertainment business (JD's World of Magic) for the Wedding Industry "Sassie Award". These awards are handed out to those who work at a high level in the Wedding industry in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley areas.

I'M PART OF THE COLLECTION!!

Earlier this year a magician from the USA made contact with me out of the blue asking for a signed playing card! He explained in his correspondence that over the past 30 years he has enthusiastically collected signed playing cards, (flyers and business cards) from the greats of magic and he wanted to add Joel Howlett from Australia to his collection!

I was very moved and excited that I was asked to be included :)

Today I was sent a special thank you note letting me know that it arrived safely as well as a ton of photos showing off his extensive and very impressive collection!!

A NEW ILLUSION!

The house was too quiet this morning, so I went to check what Miss Mia was up to. I found her hiding in the laundry basket!!

I asked her what she was doing and she told me that she was "working on an illusion" !? 🤭😅

This funny situation has got the wheels in my head turning and all day I've been thinking up methods to produce a 5 year old from a laundry basket.

ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE!

Here is a photo from a recent performance where we turned a bistro / restaurant area into a theatre! The audience of both children and adults, really enjoyed seeing my sleight of hand magic happen right under their noses!

I had the special privilege of being the after lunch floor show at Sam and Kristen's "Magical Monday Wedding" at Iron Gate Estate Guest House in the Hunter Valley this afternoon.

The weather was perfect and the wedding had a very elegant but relaxed vibe.

Last night I had the pleasure of performing an after dinner sleight of hand show at Apollo International Charlestown for a group who are visiting Newcastle from Melbourne. 

I joked with them about enjoying the beautiful Newcastle weather (there was torrential rain outside!!).

I am thrilled to announce that I will finally be doing another show in my home town of NEWCASTLE!!

Newcastle Theatre Company and JD's World of Magic have been working hard to produce a world class theatrical magic spectacular that will appeal to all ages.

The production includes elegant sleight of hand, audience participation and more fun than you could wave a wand at!

NOMINATED FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW!

I have just learnt that for the second year in a row, I have been nominated for an ACE Awards-Australian Club Entertainment Award in the "best speciality act" category! Thanks so much to the Entertainment Agents and Venues who nominated me :) 

KIA ORA!

I have just completed a performance tour of the South Island of New Zealand! Miss Mia and my partner Renee joined me for the adventure.

For some of my colleagues, performing overseas is 'just another day at the office'. But I am very relieved that it all went smoothly as I was in a rental car, driving to rural venues and working my own microphone and music on a borrowed sound system!

The Kiwi's were thrilled with my efforts and I have already been invited back in 2026!
